SOUTH AFRICA 10 Shillings 1900, Standard Bank Mafeking Siege Note P-S654b Scarce
A historically interesting type issued during the Second Boer War.  Makeking is on the northern frontier near present-day Botswana, and during the Siege from October 1899 to May 1900, a large number of troops entered the area and banknotes were needed to facilitate commerce.  Only a small number of these notes were issued, and they were redeemable at the Standard Bank's Mafeking office.  Thankfully, this example was saved for posterity.  As is typical, this type has margin roughness and internal splits.  First, this 10 shillings note is much taller than the contemporary issue by the Standard or National bank, and second, the paper is unusually thin.  Nevertheless, this local type still displays its hand-stamps.  Notice that British General Robert Baden-Powell authorized these notes.  Very interesting, and scarce.
